News from Aug 21, 2013

For five years now, international junior scientists have the opportunity to get to know Oral History Archives and to be inducted in the multidisciplinary academic work with those sources within the scope of the Summer School. Freie Universität Berlin offers access to three important Oral History Archives: the „Visual History Archive des USC Shoah Foundation Institute“, the Archive "Forced Labor 1939 - 1945", and the Archive „RefugeeVoices“.

Lectures by international scholars explain the term "resistance", thematize motivations for acts of resistance, deal with the methods and practices of oral history, and provide insights into the European culture of remembrance. Excursions to memorials in Berlin serve to deepen certain aspects. A crucial part of the summer school are several exercises where participants work very closely with biographical testimonies.

This program is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and aimed at individuals who in the past had visited a German University be it as an exchange student or researcher for one or several semesters. 20 qualified participants from Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, USA and South America are invited to join this years' Summer School. They come from different disciplines, but all of them have background knowledge on the topics "national socialism", "resistance" and / or "oral history". Altogether, we expect an exciting week full of intellectual stimuli, discussions, and interesting excursions.
