New Testimony App with Interviews from the Online Archive

Forced Labor. The Testimony App by Berlin History Workshop

Forced Labor. The Testimony App by Berlin History Workshop

The smartphone app "Forced Labor" by Berlin History Workshop provides access to the memories of  witnesses.

News from May 21, 2013

A multimedia testimony app enables tourists and locals to explore traces of the forced laborers. With the help of interview excerpts, photos and maps, the user follows their everyday paths on five different tours through the city. Visitors, students and interested natives can download the app on their smartphone and discover places not highlighted in guide books. At well-known spots, a forgotten history can be investigated.

The smartphone app is partly based on video and audio interviews from the online archive "Forced Labor 1939-1945". The Center for Digital Systems at Freie Universität Berlin participated in this interactive multimedia application with media production and voice recording.

This pilot project of mobile education is the Berlin History Workshop’s contribution to the “Destroyed Diversity” theme year 2013. The app will be available for iPhone in German and English from May 22, 2013. We hope that other languages and an Android version will follow.
