News from Aug 31, 2011

The Czech-German expert meeting "Interviews with victims of National Socialism in historical education. Educational concepts, debates and perspectives in the Czech Republic and Germany" is being organized by the Foundation „Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft“ in cooperation with the association Živá Paměť in Prague. It encourages the international exchange and new didactical approaches in working with video-taped testimonies.

During the three-day forum (september 14 - 16, 2011) institutions of both countries takl about their didactical concepts in working with video-taped testimonies. Amongst others, the educational materials and school-related activities of the online archive "Forced Labor 1939-1945" and the "Witnesses of the Shoah" project are being presented.

Accompanying the project "Forced Labor 1939-1945", the Freie Universitaet Berlin developed educational material “Video Testimonies for School Education". They were published in cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education. “Video Testimonies for School Education: Video DVD – Learning Software – Teachers’ Book” support competence-oriented learning in the classroom, on class project days, and in exam presentations. In a video DVD, five survivors recount their experiences in camps and factories. Additional films provide background information about forced labor, indemnification and about the online-archive. The learning software provides additional tasks, maps, transcripts and photos, informational texts and tips on methods of use, as well as a timeline and lexicon. An accompanying teachers’ book assists in the preparation of teaching, providing informational texts, suggestions for tasks and worksheets. The DVDs and teachers’ book are available at the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (Federal Agency for Civic Education).

In the seminar, DVDs, materials and working methods will be presented and discussed.
